The Stones: Still rolling, slowly
John Swenson, The Village Voice, 11 October 1973
THE ROLLING Stones currently occupy a unique position in the music world — the only veteran supergroup left from the early '60s that has captured and maintained a large audience while subtly reflecting the myriad changes that have accompanied the pageantry of rock, from the crude but vital inception of the British blues process to the fey pseudo-decadence of the glitter trend. Despite significant changes in personnel and musical direction (always carefully charted for maximum popular impact), the Stones have maintained a mythic consistency of image that continues to get stronger as the years go by. Each time it seems about to dissipate, the group manages to lash out with enough renewed strength to reassert itself in its traditional position as the top status rock 'n' roll band in the world.
