The Small Faces: 'Itchycoo Park'

John Pidgeon, Record Hunter, March 1991

The first Small Faces single written by Marriott and Lane, 'I Got Mine', flopped on release as the follow-up to 'Whatcha Gonna Do About It' late in 1965. The group were pushed away from their R&B roots into pop by their next release, 'Sha La La La Lee', written by Mort Schuman and Kenny Lynch. But Marriott and Lane (who speaks below) caught on quickly, and over the next two years their songs ensured the group were in the charts more weeks than they were out of it. 'Itchycoo Park', a paean to a patch of green in the East End, was an antidote to the anthems of the Summer of Love.
