A year ago, the Pixies were considered the last word in rock bacchanalia. The Boston-based band's three albums – Come On Pilgrim, Surfer Rosa and Doolittle – combined the raw power of The Stooges with a penchant for the grotesque reminiscent of David Lynch. The group was the intellectual's favourite 'dumb-ass' rock 'n' roll band, and the most popular American indie group in Britain.
