The Lounge Lizards: No Pain For Cakes (Antilles)

AT THE ICA last year, I was disappointed by the Lounge Lizards. The pianist's fringe, the languid horns, the bath of cigarette smoke, I could find no more than an extended, jazznoir cliché. No Pain For Cakes certainly has more to it than that, but is still restricted, unrealised, a squabble of talent and ideas that never seem to find space to breathe in.
