The La's, Sultans Of Ping FC, Spitfire, The Popguns: Sussex University Carnival, Falmer

David Bennun, Melody Maker, 13 June 1992

SOMETHING HAS to happen to the Popguns soon. I've never pretended they were great favourites of mine, but every time I hear them, I'm taken aback that they're not more popular. Maybe the problem lies with perceptions of female-fronted guitar bands. If the singer con demonstrate that she's f***ed-up, a total crackpot, a hell-bitch and rightly proud of it, preferably all of the above, male journalists will welcome her with open arms and one hand over their collective groin. If that's anatomically possible. Come on down Courtney, Katie-Jane, Inger... Wendy? Wendy, alas, is shockingly normal. But on the strength of songs like shit-kicking newie 'Get Out', something really ought to happen to the Popguns. They should top the Indie charts or spontaneously combust or go Death Metal or get office tabs or... something. At the moment they're just standing there, and it's making me nervous.
