YEARS AGO, during what someone told me was the height of it all, Ray Davies was best known for the dozens of songs he wrote that sounded exactly like 'You Really Got Me', his first well-known composition (which, incidentally owed considerably to 'Louie Louie'), and because he was one of the shittiest rhythm guitarists in history. Brother Dave had the longest hair in the Rockdom of the day and played one of the fastest (albeit sloppiest) lead guitars then extant. And fellow Kinks Peter Quaife and Mick Avory were loved by national television audiences for their inane grin and inability to hold onto drumsticks on Hullabulloo, respectively.
