WHENEVER ARETHA Franklin comes to town, which is not all that often, I try to see her. Partly because she is a genuine unhyped star who is a hot proposition for any newspaper, but mostly because she can sing — in the great way that goes back to Bessie Smith and Mahalia Jackson, though accent and climate are a little different.
