LATER SHE realised she'd really been attracted to him because he looked sad. All the other boys on the beach were so cheerful, and the way they'd showed they were cheerful was beginning to drive her bananas – they'd do things like grab your sun oil and pour it all over her book, or throw those Goddamn beach balls at your surfboard just as you were bracing for a wave and mess up your balance.
