UNTIL ABOUT two years ago the Allman Brothers Band existed in a vacuum whose bounds were conveniently defined by the Mason-Dixon line. Before them was Tommy Roe and rhythm 'n blues, the only music the South wanted to be proud of, could afford to be proud of. The concept of liberated session musicians hardly existed outside of the north, where the daily role of a commercial musician was likely to be more confining than in the south, especially in Muscle Shoals, Alabama, where the seeds of the Allmans were planted.
