BY THE TIME Merry Clayton got the call one night that got her out of bed and into the studio to unleash her window-rattling voice on 'Gimme Shelter', she'd already taken a shot at solo fame, cutting singles like 'Usher Boy', 'Nothing Left To Do But Cry' and 'It's In His Kiss' (before Betty Everett's hit) for Capitol Records in the first half of the '60s.
