WHEN IT comes to buying records, what's a bargain? Probably the best value I ever had was paying a princely 75 pence for a mint copy of the Teddy Bears' album in a supposedly knowledgeable second-hand store (the salesman couldn't figure out why I was jigging around once he had the cash and I had the record; when I told him, he retired quietly to contemplate the possibilities of a meeting between a sharp knife and his intestines), or maybe it was the time I made a successful £5 bid for The World Of Cecil Taylor on Candid, years before it reappeared in the catalogues.
