Stump: A Fierce Pancake (Chrysalis) ***

Michael Azerrad, Rolling Stone, 16 June 1988

FRESH FROM an extended engagement at the Theatre of the Absurd, Stump makes music that virtually defines the word quirky. This half-English, half-Irish quartet boasts a strong Captain Beefheart influence, although the lyrics are like something out of Rabelais. Sometimes music as out of kilter as this is crudely made, but Stump's chops are first-rate, and the band offhandedly adds in tasty little bits that others would milk for an entire song.
