Stephen Bishop: Songs In the Rough – From 'Heartbreak Hotel' to 'Higher Love': Rock's Greatest Songs in First-Draft Form

Tom Graves, The Washington Post, 23 June 1996

ESSENTIALLY A NOVELTY book for novice songwriters, Songs In the Rough is both shy on substance and skimpy on songs. The idea behind the book was to reproduce the rough-draft manuscripts of some of rock's most enduring songs, complete with the false starts, scratched-out lyric lines, doodles and side notes that are all a part of the laborious craft of songwriting. Musician and songwriter Stephen Bishop, known for the song 'On and On' among others, put the book together and conducted short, informative interviews with many of the songwriters.
