IN THE BEGINNING there was Ashley Hutchings, he of steadfast purpose, leaving Fairport to form a group dedicated to the preservation of English folk-song in January, 1970. With Gay and Terry Woods, and well-loved folk-club duo, Maddy Prior and Tim Hart and a name which came out of a character in folk legend via Martin Carthy — Steeleye Span.
