Sophie B. Hawkins: Tongues and Tails (Columbia)

Chuck Eddy, L.A. Weekly, 18 June 1992

SOPHIE B. HAWKINS is a former New York performance artist and world-beat drummer whose confidential-singer-songstress debut, Tongues and Tails, is currently selling like hot cakes in several middlebrow post-yuppie enclaves. People who've only read her words call her cornball, and halfway through, she does mush out for a track or two. But though singing about fucking and praying so much might strike punk cynics as secondhand, Prince hasn't made an album this exciting in 12 years.
