WELL, YA KNOW HOW IT IS ON SATURDAY EVENINGS. The rain was terrible, and I couldn't get a bus and, well, by the time I got to the McEwan Hall venue, three-quarters of the Soft Machine had gone off for a pre-show drink. Only Hugh Hopper, the band's thoughtful and melancholic bass-player, was sitting in the subterranean public-bog-like dressing room.
