FROM CHRONICLING his days playing conkers at Tulse Hill Secondary School to running up against police officers Smiley has always been the charmer cheeking his way round authority. He's the mimic who parodies, flatters and impersonates, taking the language of his dancefloor roots and combining it with both colloquial Cockney and bland received mediaspeak.
