Sir Douglas: Still Moving

Bill Bentley, L.A. Weekly, 30 January 1981

THE MAN that producer Jerry Wexler, himself tagged the "godfather of rhythm & blues," recently described as the "best all-around rock musician" playing, is one of the music's true all-star characters, capable of saying and playing just about anything. Most listeners remember his 'Mendocino' hit, introduced with the flowery phrase, "The Sir Douglas Quintet is back. We'd like to thank all the beautiful people all over the country for all the beautiful vibrations. We love you." The fact that the song was released over 11 years ago and the years in between have been a roller-coaster career for the 40-year-old Texas trooper doesn't phase Doug Sahm in the least, as he sits in East Hollywood, again recording and readying his Quintet for yet another cross-country and European tour.
