Rosanne Cash: Somewhere In The Stars (Columbia)

Mitchell Cohen, Creem, October 1982

MOST OF the songs on Somewhere In The Stars, the third album by Rosanne Cash, are about the pitfalls of contemporary liaisons, the moments when emotions get messy and spill all over good sense and lofty expectations. "New love stuff", as she sings it on 'Down On Love'. Not unfamiliar territory, especially when occupied by a (file under) Female Vocalist/Interpretive. But Rosanne Cash is no dewy-eyed Bambi in the threatening thicket of romantic entanglements. She's wise to the game, knows all the pitches and handles them, even tossing a few of her own when she needs a shot of reassurance.
