AH, IT'S GREAT to be living in these days of "progressive" rock. Or so the record companies, hip record stores, and groups themselves would have us believe. Is it really that great??? A casual survey of the most popular rock artists will reveal that a surprisingly large number of them come under four distinct categories, characterized respectively by lead(en) sludge, pretentious sterility, gutless sterility, and overmannered excess:
