IN. 1962, RINGO Starr was the scruffy-looking drummer in a Liverpool band called Rory Storm and the Hurricanes. The group was one of the bigger acts in town, and he was even given a showcase every night called "Starr Time". So when he accepted an offer in August to replace Pete Best in a rival band known as the Beatles, whose members he had befriended when they were all playing seedy nightclubs in Hamburg, it wasn't clear that he was making the best bet.
