BLIZZARDS, BLACK ICE and freezing fog meant that, for millions of Britons, the first New Year’s Eve of the millennium was spent tucked up at home in front of the telly. If the weather put paid to your party plans, don’t be too disappointed. The alternative might have been much, much worse. You could have been stranded at Luton Airport or, even worse, at Resolution, an all-night bash at London’s Alexandra Palace that made watching an old Inspector Morse mystery seem like an ideal way to spend the evening.
