WE'VE BEEN experiencing a remarkable phenomenon in recent months; the re-emergence of rhythm and blues as an important force in American popular music. Since it emerged from "race music" in the late forties, R&B has historically exercised an influence on pop music far out of proportion to its actual popularity.
