Pulp: His'n'Hers

Ben Thompson, MOJO, May 1994

FORGET EVERYTHING you know about what great music is – Bessie Smith, The Beatles, Neil Young, Al Green, all gone (not forever, just for 40 minutes). Now construct a new lineage comprising ‘Young Girl’ by Gary Puckett & The Union Gap, Baccara's ‘Yes Sir I Can Boogie’, ‘Walk On By’ (The Stranglers' version not Dionne Warwicke's) and ‘Airport’ by The Motors. At the end of this family line, in a sepia tint portrait of snazzy crimplene and half-discarded feather boas, stand Pulp.
