Professor Longhair: Mardi Gras In Baton Rouge (Rhino)
Don Snowden, Rhino, 1991
AHH, YES, THE virtues of the repertoire.
Admittedly, it's a foreign concept these days, when artists are almost universally expected to write and perform fresh material rather than re-interpret a body of work. The latter approach seems hopelessly outdated and usually for good reason – there's nothing worse than people resting on their laurels and coasting through a career on the coattails of a particular song or sound that hit the mark ages ago.
