Pop Will Eat Itself: At Weird's Bar And Grill (RCA)

David Bennun, Melody Maker, 6 March 1993

SURPRISE, SURPRISE. The point of a Pop Will Eat Itself gig (of which this is a record) isn't, God forbid, the music, it's the sense of community created among the audience — the boys veering just this side of crustdom, the girls clad in every manner of multi-coloured legging available in this sartorially exalted land (Enjoy, kids. You were made for each other). It's also the gibbering, clownish energy of the Poppies themselves, surely the most exhilaratingly ugly and obtuse pile of cartoon gonks to call themselves a band and get away with it since... since who? Sigue Sigue Sputnik come to mind, but they didn't fool anyone for long.
