Author's note, 2018: Here is my late 1964 insight on the transformation of British pop into rock which can be dated to 21 February 1963 when the Beatles' 'Please Please Me' hit the #2 spot in the official charts. My article masqueraded as a review of three books, one on Cliff Richard, the other two on the Beatles and the Rolling Stones. It was my second ever published piece on rock'n'roll in New Society.
