A LONG LINE snaked round the corner from the squalid end of Santa Monica Boulevard. Disinterested-looking cops in riot helmets were scattered all around. People had been waiting almost all day. You could cut the atmosphere with a knife, except that they'd been confiscated along with guns, ganja and bottles by the security guards at the door.
