Peter Doggett: There's a Riot Going On – Revolutionaries, Rock Stars and the Rise and Fall of 1960s Counter-Culture

Jon Newey, Jazzwise, February 2008

FOR A BOOK that takes a very protracted look at the role played by rock music and its, mostly, over-paid and over-pampered stars in the political and cultural revolution of the 1960s, it's interesting to note that the author leads off with an examination of the campaigning words and music of LeRoi Jones, Max Roach, Abbey Lincoln, Charles Mingus, Ornette Coleman, John Coltrane and Albert Ayler. Wherever rock goes, jazz has been there first. But of course never gets paid for it. Or gets its name in the book title. But hey, nothing changes.
