Pete Rock & CL Smooth: Mecca & The Soul Brother (Elektra/All formats)

Angus Batey, New Musical Express, 20 June 1992

FOR A DEBUT LP, Mecca & The Soul Brother has some serious expectations to live up to. Pete Rock has earned himself a reputation as producer/remixer through his work with EPMD, Brand Nubian and two radical reconstructions of Public Enemy singles, 'Night Train' and 'Shut 'Em Down'. Meanwhile CL's smooth flow and verbal dexterity have been in demand for posse tracks such as the Rock-produced anti-censorship rap 'Don't Curse' from the last Heavy D album.
