Pavement: Crooked Rain

Elaine Cusack, Select, March 1994

NOW BEFORE YOU START, just prepare to swallow your words if you've only ever seen Pavement as a band with a Fall fixation and a neat line in daft drummers. The world of Pavement hasn't collapsed around their heads with the departure of sticksman Gary, and they haven't spent their time desperately trying to come up with another Slanted And Enchanted. And don't mention The Fall. OK, there's a track called 'Hit The Plane Down' but it hasn't got anything to do with 'Hit The North'. Singer Stephen Malkmus may let his voice slide into a Mark E growl, but that's all. With Crooked Rain Pavement have moved on and so should we.
