No Barriers. Tags. Frontiers. Trends. Jean Karakos' Celluloid Label Is Truly Independent
Gene Santoro, Pulse!, May 1987
SMALL RECORD labels usually concentrate on one particular musical style, or a related set of styles. Not Celluloid Records, which has sought from the beginning to be home to a range of sounds that would do a much larger company proud. African popsters Toure Kunda, downtown New York experimenters Material, heavy metal monsters Primal Scream, high-speed jolt-cola thrashers the Splatcats, avant-jazz explorer Eric Dolphy, jazz-inspired proto-rappers the Last Poets, angry punk hip-bop that combines John Lydon with Afrika Bambaataa or Futura 2000 with the Clash, folkadelic revivalists the Golden Palominos — some of the more interesting explorations consigned to Nowhereland by the indifference of the major U.S. labels have found their way to wax here.
