AS AN EYEWITNESS account of the dangerous excesses of the 1970s rock scene, Apathy for the Devil is in a compulsively readable class of its own. Nick Kent – formerly a star writer for the NME, friend of many of rock's leading figures from the period and, ultimately, a casualty of its reckless drug culture – had a Zelig-like knack for being in the right place at the right time. Wherever the action was, for most of the 1970s the dandyish Kent with his notepad and drugs stash was never far away.
