Moving History with Sha Na Na

Steve Turner, Beat Instrumental, November 1972

Back-stage areas are hardly ever glamorous and form a stark contrast with the dazzle of lights and adulation that lurk beyond. Here, even the most super of superstars is made to look human in the surroundings. New York's Madison Square Garden is no exception. On the last Wednesday of August the dressing room doors that line the long whitewashed corridors carried the names of the artists that were to take part in what was regarded as John Lennon's very own Bangla Desh Concert. Each one was hand-written with a magic marker pen... Stevie Wonder... Roberta Flack... Sha Na Na... Elephants Memory... and the king and queen themselves... John and Yoko.
