MONIE LOVE is a good storyteller, an adept rapper and a mediocre songwriter. Her lyrics flow and flow, but on In a Word or 2, her follow-up to Down to Earth (1990), the grooves rarely go. That's too bad because Love — energetically dropping wisdom over hip-house beats — clearly wants to free your ass as well as your mind.
