Mavis Staples: Time Waits For No One (Paisley Park)

Simon Reynolds, Melody Maker, 10 June 1989

NINETEEN EIGHTY nine has been a year for bumping into old friends, what with the spate of reissues, relaunched careers, and general rehabilitation. Back in my brief summer of soul mania, there was this song by Mavis Staples called 'I Have Learned To Live Without You' that infallibly reduced me to tears. Third chorus, where her voice breaks, I broke too. Mavis also belted it out for The Staples Singers in the early Seventies, and they had their moments (the abhorrent 'Respect Yourself' not being one of them).
