Material: One Down (Elektra 60206)
Sam Sutherland, High Fidelity, March 1983
CHARACTERIZING MATERIAL'S work as "new music" could be somewhat misleading, since synthetic pop proponents have recently begun to use the term in lieu of "new wave " But its earlier definition described an odd coalition among elements of avantgarde jazz, classicism, and points between and beyond, and Material stacks up as an example of how far this freewheeling movement has traveled.
