Make A Date: Stan Tracey
John Lewis, Metro, January 2008
"DOES ANYONE here realise how good this guy is?" remarked the legendary saxophonist Sonny Rollins during a lengthy session at Ronnie Scott's nightclub in the 1960s. Rollins was referring to Stan Tracey, who, for most of the 60s, served as the club's in-house pianist. To this day, Tracey is so much a part of London's jazz furniture that we sometimes take him for granted, but the 81-year-old still possess a style that has the power to shock, charm, impress and amuse in equal measure.
