Love: False Start (Harvest SHVL 787)

Nick Jones, Cream, May 1971

SHOULD YOU still need convincing that Love are a really fine band and always have been, we have here their penultimate album, oddly titled False Start although I can't think why, unless it's an apology for the less strong Four Sail and Out There albums featuring this band still in its formative stages. Founder-member and mastermind behind Love, though, is Arthur Lee. This is his sixth album. It comes complete with the love-rock seal of approval indelibly stamped on the opening track. Nothing outrageously spectacular (or self-indulgent) — just politely stunning! A lead guitar endorsement, courtesy James Marshall Hendrix on 'The Everlasting First'. Say no more!
