ONCE HE wore black, tinselled clothes and was a human screen for movies. He sang and wrote about evil characters; sometimes happier ones. But always the unlikely. A mystique and sinister aura surrounded the band Lou Reed led and directed: the Velvet Underground. In early days they tripped around as part of the Andy Warhol art circus.
