Lonnie Johnson — Bluesman Who Played Jazz

Max Jones, Melody Maker, 27 June 1970

LONNIE JOHNSON, who died last week, was a rarity in the blues field — a man who, though a folk artist in certain respects, played superb jazz on guitar. His early solos can stand comparison with the finest recorded anywhere at any time. His duets with Eddie Lang are acknowledged classics, and his work in bands or as accompanist to other vocalists or instrumentalists was always of a high order.
