VERNON REID'S POSITION at the forefront of the Black Rock Coalition gave Living Colour's first two albums, Vivid and Time's Up, a biting, satirical edge, putting black rock back on the agenda for the first time since Whitfield and Hendrix. Creating music every bit as didactic as Public Enemy's, Vernon Reid and company created a hydra-like monster that took on board anything and everything from Billy Cobham to Ornette Coleman.
