Little Feat: Hotcakes & Outtakes: 30 Years of Little Feat

Jon Newey, Jazzwise, January 2001

FOLLOW A CURVED PATH from Steely Dan to the Meters and at a point midway through the arc you'll stumble into the big tracks of Little Feat. A heady, volatile trail of artistry and excess that gloriously fused rock, boogie, jazz and a hefty dose of New Orleans funk swagger until the momentum ground to a halt with the death of front man Lowell George in 1979. Box jobs being the order of the day, this tempting 4CD and book set is a useful if somewhat slightly wasted opportunity to re-examine the highs and lows of one the great American bands of the 70s. A strangely enigmatic bunch of Hollywood weirdoes that burst into life when guitarist/songwriter George and bassist Roy Estrada decided to quit Zappa's Mothers Of Invention in 1970.
