Levitation: Need For Not

David Cavanagh, Select, June 1992

SOME DEBUT ALBUMS, of course, are more eagerly awaited than others. It would be hard to Imagine anyone chewing their nails to the quick waiting for Pop Am Good or The Werefrogs to deliver their first breathless 33rpm bulletins from the studio. Levitation, on the other hand, get to people in all sorts of inexplicable, visceral ways, whether it's Mark E Smith asking them outside on The Fall tour for being "a bunch of fuckin' crusty poofs" (just cos drummer Dave Francolini hasn't exactly overdone it with the old Timotei recently): or whether it's nervous journalists wondering whether the latest explosion of violence in a Levitation set is real or staged: or what they're on or what they're listening to — you name it, but everyone seems to be on Levitation's case and this is one debut LP where the world pays attention.
