KURTIS BLOW gets a lot more airplay these days than he did in the '80s. That's because back in the day – when the long-term viability of hip-hop was in question – only a handful of stations played rap music. Now that hip-hop is entrenched in the popular culture (with subgenres, no less), pioneers like Kurtis are rightfully celebrated, but it's not mere nostalgia: The music holds up.
