IN THE EARLY '70s, Derby-born bluesman Kevin Coyne's unflinching portraits of mental despair and emotional turmoil helped pave the way for punk. His songs were influenced by his experience as a drug counsellor and psychiatric nurse, though in 1985 a mental breakdown, combined with his long battle with alcohol, caused him to leave England.
