Kevin Coyne, 1944-2004
Alan Clayson, The Guardian, 6 December 2004
KEVIN COYNE was a singer-songwriter respected by his contemporaries but lacking their chart success. Nevertheless, largely through Radio One presenter John Peel's championing, he built a cult following. What he proved was the artistic merit of sweating over something new while more celebrated contemporaries turned out increasingly ordinary albums. He toured New Zealand and North America, and released a further seven Virgin albums – while their spin-off singles were worthwhile marketing exercises.
