Kate Bush: 'Under the Ivy' on The Tube, 1986
Tom Doyle, Nine Eight Books, October 2022
RAMSHACKLE AND FUNNY, chaotic and controversial, Channel 4's live-to-air music show The Tube flew in the face of the glossy pop cultural trends of the 1980s. Launched on 5 November 1982, three nights after the UK's fourth channel first began broadcasting, the weekly, ninety-minute programme stirred indie rock and pop together with alternative comedy, in a heady cocktail served up by its famously "yeah, whatever" post-punk hosts Paula Yates and Jools Holland.
