Johnny Guitar Watson: Hammersmith Odeon, London

Maureen Paton, Melody Maker, 27 November 1976

THE GUITAR HERO stakes is such an overworked concept that it seems almost poetic justice to overact it outrageously to the point of parody. Johnny Guitar Watson, in his Saturday night concert at Hammersmith Odeon, did just that; so much so that the visual spectacle of him playing his guitar every which way provided the perfect diversion for anyone finding his music more than a little bland. And I suspect, judging by the rush for the doors before he came back for an encore, that quite a few people did.
