John Entwistle: Rigor Mortis Sets In (MCA-321); Roger Daltrey: Daltrey (MCA-328)

Gary Lucas, Zoo World, 17 August 1973

TWO INTERESTING corollaries to the albums under discussion are the interviews with Daltrey and Entwistle that appear in the appendix of Gary Herman's otherwise boring and pedantic exegesis of The Who (Collier Books, 0603). Townshend has always been the interviewer's favorite, self-styled intellectual and all that; Keith Moon has worked long and difficult hours to achieve permanent status as a meshugah ego-maniac alkie and/or speed freak (I well remember the bewildered shock and disbelief I felt after being informed by my good friend and mentor Fred Perry, brother of Richard, that Moon was a "registered amphetamine addict." Or something like that. This was in early 1967 and Fred, the original English Rock Freak, was not to be disputed, though he later owned up that his source was something as reliable as The News of the World), and consequently, interviews with Mr. Moon are not much different content-wise than a Viv Stanshall interview, a John Cleese interview, or an informal discussion with Richard Meltzer.
